« MSDN Webcast - Extending ASP.NET with Mo... | Main | A WS-Merry Interop Talk - December in Sa... »

This whitepaper is finally live and you will not believe how cool the new localization features are for ASP.NET 2.0, I'm duly impressed with the new integrated IDE support for resources, and in particular with the extensibility of localization expressions. Peaked your interest? Read it here:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/asp.net/whidbey/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dnvs05/html/ASP2local.asp

I really enjoyed working with Achim Ruopp and Simon Calvert of the localization team at Microsoft on this paper. They were a fantastic resource for getting me up to speed on the underpinnings of the new localization features of ASP.NET 2.0. I could not have written this paper with as much detail without some insider feedback so I really have to thank you guys for answering all of my detailed questions and for all the time you took to give comprehensive feedback during each review cycle. Thanks guys!

Hi there,

In the article you write 'One technique for this is demonstrated in the sample code' on the subject of changing a language in runtime. Where can this code be found?

Look inside the global.asax, if you are referring to overriding culture for each request.

That is indeed what I'm reffering to.

So let me rephrase: Where is global.asax?

[The source code is mentioned, but there is no link to download/browse it in the article :)]

It appears that my code sample was not initially posted to the MSDN site but they are currently fixing this issue, and when it is properly posted I will add a blog entry. Sorry for the trouble, not sure what happened there.

How will you compare the Resource Manager based approach and the Duplicate Site Content Approach from the performance stand point in ASP.NET 2.0?

Is one approach better than the other ?

I don't have any metrics yet on ASP.NET 2.0 performance, however I do know that the resource manager (RM) approach with 2.0 is significantly improved for ASP.NET 2.0. The runtime instantiates the RM for you and caches its content to service requests. Typically it is must faster to serve up static content pages, however if you combine caching optimizations and good architecture, you can acheive equivalent performance and improve productivity for maintentance. I'm working on some things for 2.0 that will give me some stats to share comparing static+DB vs. RM+DB vs. RM+DB+cache but this won't be public info until after Beta2 likely.
