I load the VPC. I capture my DVD drive. I open Explorer. I click on d:\DVDbla. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait.

I try again.

I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait.

I finally get a view of the drive. I double-click the setup.exe for VS.

I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait.

I get errors. I decide this sucks. I search on google. I find this: http://weblogs.asp.net/juntao/archive/2004/09/07/226418.aspx

Now I'm copying DVD to my local drive so can install the dang thing. So, I had time to blog for a few minutes. I could have written 20 other blogs today with all the other waiting...but I had false hope.

Can you feel my pain? Sigh.

The worst part, I think I went through this before, without the google step, but I forgot. Euphoric recall I guess.

Updated 30 minutes later...the saga continues...

So, I try to copy the VS directory of either my VSTS or VS Standard 2005 DVDs to the local drive. They all choke on this cab file: _15780_RTL_x86_enu_NETCF_v2.0.cab with a CRC check failure. Not sure if this is a known problem, yet. Let's see if it works by copying all but that file...sigh.

Updated 1 day later...it's done!

Well, it turned out more than just a few .cab files were failing CRC check. So, I used ISOBuster to unpack the .iso file onto my local, then installed from there. It took about 6 hours to install the Visual Studio Team System 2005 (that, after removing things I didn't need to use) but no gliches this time. Whew!

Now, I have to build another VPC that is NOT running on Indigo bits...

I had the same problem. I ended up copying the files from the DVD to the host machine. Then I copied thm from the host to the guest using a file share. I was finally able to install from that copy. The only problem was the whole process took about 2 hours, only to find I copied Visual Studio 2005 Professional and not the Team Suite I wanted. I haven't been motivated enough to start over yet...

Michelle, I had the same sort of hideous slowness with VPC for just about anything before I ended up re-installing Windows a couple of weeks back because I was just unable to run Beta 2 at a reasonable working pace. Everything having to do with hardware was dog slow. I tried everything I could think of. Moving VPC off the main drive, reinstalling VPC extensions, SP1 several times nothing. After I reinstalled Windows VPC runs nearly as fast as native install. I've seen this on a couple of machines. It seems if VPC is installed on a bogged down machine (ie. one that has Windows runnign for a year :-}) it ends up running badly. Not sure why this would be...

Rick, interesting...I think I noticed the VPC runs slower on my "older" windows install vs. my newer install (laptop). I try to rebuild my laptop every 6 months...to keep things clean. And, I always run my VPCs off my external drive at 7200 spin rate. In fact, I've had my machine just "shut off" in mid VPC run if I run it locally. On one of my older machines, it actually brought the drive down. So, when I saw it happen again on this laptop, I decided never to run a VPC locally again, if I can help it. And I certainly make sure to back up first.

Michele - It's funny that VPC doesn't support iso files bigger than 2.2GB, but has no problem with a "real" DVD in a host drive. So what I use is the free Deamon Tools (slick virtual cd/dvd drive software) to mount the iso, then tell VPC to capture the host drive. A bit of a two- step, but works well and doesn't require copying or extracting the iso.

This works well for Virtual Server as well, but means you have to have remote desktop to get to the demon tools setup.

Obviously the best solution would be a service pack to VPC /VS that allowed full-size iso captures.

Actually, my problem was with the ACTUAL DVD drive on the host machine. No matter what DVD I put in there.

I am a trainer in at a Microsoft Certified Training partner. New MS courses are provided on VirtualPC. In a particular class with identical equipment and Ghosted machines, all of the Virtual machines would run well EXCEPT on a particular machine, where they would slow down. Turns out it was the DVD drive that was defective (it produced read errors). Why this particular piece of technology (Defective DVD Drive) would slow down Virtual PC is just beyond my comprehension. (the real machine was still really fast)

After replacing the DVD drive, all went back to normal. Bizarre!
